A journal form DeviantArt

Thought I would post it here too...

I started trying to teach myself to draw a little over a year ago. I had always been interested in learning how and doodled some over the years but nothing serious. Then in Jan of 2005 I got a job that required me to be on the phone for 8 hours a day. Boring as all hell...

To combat this I walked to the Borders across the street and bought a book I found on drawing Manga. I took it back to work, busted it open and tried to draw... obviously the results were mixed, having no prior experience and really no concept of proportions. But I pressed on and by the end of the first week or so I was able to draw a fairly decent headshot. Two of the heads are posted here, Surprised and Happy. I was very happy with them.

Eventually, after drawing head after head, some better than others, I moved onto bodies. I struggled with learning the proportions of the arms and legs to torsos and heads. I struggled to make the characters look more then two dimensional. I kept on trying though I didn’t give up. I loved doing it and it killed the time of miserably being on the phone.

After building up a little bit of skill from where there was once nothing… something happened. I got a new job. A job where I can’t just sit and draw all day. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job… but I haven’t had time to draw anything in months. I did the Kitten picture seen here on a lark on day back in February and I was very happy with it but until recently haven’t done anything else. I participated in 24 hour comic book day earlier this month, and found that, as I had expected, the minimal amount of skill I had built up was about gone… as the 24 hours pressed on I slowly tried to relearn as I churned out pages. Some came out better than others. I also attempted to create a mascot for my local Anime club for a contest, and it was a miserable failure. I’m mad, I’m frustrated and I have no one to blame but myself…

I want to draw more, I really do. I’m thinking about taking a class, or something I have to commit to get back in the groove. So if anyone out there has any suggestions or comments that may help me I would appreciate it… Thanks.

A class would definitely be useful. Maybe allot a time over the weekend for just drawing...
